What is I Am Team GB?

Brought to you by The National Lottery and ITV, supported by the British Olympic Association and Join In, I Am Team GB will be the nation’s biggest ever sports day. I Am Team GB is a golden opportunity for you to try a new sport or physical activity as thousands of local sports club and activity groups open their doors for free.

When is I Am Team GB taking place?

All sporting events take place on Saturday 27 August at clubs across the country when we welcome our Olympians back from Rio and we wish our Paralympians well as they depart for Brazil.

What sort of events can I take part in?

There are thousands of different events from archery to sailing, and bowls to karate. There are some more unusual ones too such as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Rookie Lifeguard training. Just type your postcode into the I Am Team GB website, to see which events are taking place in your area.

Can I sign up for more than one event?

Yes, if you think you have time to get from one event to another, there is nothing to stop you from signing up for more than one event.

How much does it cost to take part?

All I am Team GB events are free to take part.

Will the event be suitable for young children?

Please check the event description when you are signing up for the event. Most events should be suitable for all the family but please do bear in mind that due to the nature of some sports they may not be suitable for children. If you unsure it is probably best to contact the venue prior to the event.

Is there parking at the venue?

In order to ensure that parking is available, we suggest you check the venue’s website for facilities.

Am I guaranteed a place or is there a chance the event could be full? How will I know?

We are really lucky to have a large range of different types of clubs that have signed up to take part in I Am Team GB. These clubs vary from local grassroots clubs through to large iconic sporting venues each with their own capacity limits. We do advise contacting your preferred club prior to attending the avoid disappointment.

What should I wear?

Most physical activity can be carried out wearing comfortable loose fitting clothing. Be prepared for any inclement weather, so take an extra layer or waterproofs just in case. If you are taking part in an aquatic discipline, you will need to wear a swimming costume or trunks.

Do they provide all the equipment?

All the equipment you need to try your chosen sport should be provided by the organiser, with the exception of swim wear.

Will there be somewhere to get changed/showered?

We think it would be best to go dressed ready to take part in your event. If you are taking part in an indoor aquatic event, then you can probably expect changing facilities. If your event is outdoors, you may be lucky enough to have showers/changing facilities but go prepared with an extra large towel just in case!

Will the event be fully accessible?

Depending on your event’s venue, there may be some uneven ground or steps but events should be fully accessible. We recommend that you contact the event organisers of your preferred club to check their accessibility.

Is the event suitable for disabled people?

We hope that most events will be suitable for all to take part in some way, but you will need to check the event description and we advise you contact the event organiser in advance via their website if they have one, to be sure.

Will I get a free kitbox?

No. The free kit boxes are being offered to event hosts only to help them promote their I Am Team GB event.

Will there be an elite athlete at the event?

We will be encouraging as many athletes as possible – past and present – to attend events in their local communities. However sadly we cannot guarantee an athlete appearance due to the large number of clubs taking part.

Will I be on TV?

ITV cameras will be at some events across the UK.

I would like to volunteer at an event, how do I sign up?

Many of the events are looking for volunteers. Just check on the website to see if your chosen event needs help.

I am going to my first parkrun and I’ve heard I need a barcode, how do I get it?

If you want to register your time for your first parkrun, then you need a barcode. In order to get a parkrun barcode you need to visit the parkrun website in advance and sign up for one. But don’t worry, you can still take part if you don’t have a barcode, you just won’t receive an official time.

What if it rains? Will the event still go ahead?

We all know that the weather in the UK can be very unpredictable and most event organisers will take this into account and have contingency plans. If events need to be cancelled due to safety concerns, then this will be beyond the organisers control and safety must come first. We are sure you will understand.

Are the coaches CRB checked?

The vast majority of sports clubs are very well run and will ensure that their coaches and other volunteers are fully CRB checked. It is the responsibility of the participant to ensure that they are happy with the arrangements in place at the club or group whose event they are attending. If you have any concerns please do contact your preferred event to check.

If my child tries a sport and decides that they like it, are they guaranteed to get a place in a club?

There is no guarantee that participants will be able to join the club or group that is organising the event they are attending. However, the purpose of many of the events taking place for I Am Team GB is to attract new participants. Please speak to the organisers of your particular event about the possibility of joining. If they are not accepting new participants, they may be able to suggest an alternative club or group nearby.

Is there an age limit for the event?

Please read the event description to check if they have identified any age restrictions, most events should be suitable for all the family but if you are unsure please contact the event organiser of your preferred event.

Is there room for spectators?

Most clubs or groups will welcome spectators to cheer on and encourage new participants, but please be prepared to be flexible if the area is busy and follow the signs and directions of the organisers.

Will there be food available at the event?

Clubs may be selling refreshments but there is no guarantee you will be able to buy food and drink as all events have very different facilities. Be sure to take some water with you at the very least, especially if it is a hot day.

What time does it start/finish?

The majority of sporting clubs show the start and finish time of their events on the I am Team GB website.

Does it matter if I don’t arrive at the start of the event, will I still get to take part?

For most events, you do not need to arrive at a given time, unless the organiser has stipulated this. But please don’t turn up 15 minutes before the end of the event and expect to take part. The organisers may need to vacate their venue by a given time and will need to pack up their equipment.
